Welcome aboard CGC MUNRO (WMSL 755). I hope you are excited by the prospect of sailing on one of the newest cutters in the fleet. The ship's motto originates from Petty Officer Douglas Munro's Medal of Honor citation. Petty Officer Munro gallantly gave his life for his country during the evacuation of a battalion of Marines trapped by enemy Japanese forces at Guadalcanal on September 27, 1942. His actions remain a testament to his courage and serve as a foundation for current and future Coast Guardsmen. If you are new to the San Francisco Bay area, you have the fortune of being assigned to one of the premier areas of the country. With an abundance of government housing, you avoid the biggest drawback to the area which is the high cost of housing. This is a place of unparalleled natural beauty, with a sophisticated urban community that includes a phenomenal dedication to the arts and some of the best universities in the world. For those who enjoy being outdoors, you can enjoy activities like sailing, surfing, snowboarding, hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, or mountain biking. If you are a fan of professional or college sports - you are at the center of the universe with the 49'ers, Raiders, Giants, A's, Warriors, and Sharks all within an hour's drive. If you are a college sports fan, Cal and Stanford regularly turn out national-level teams.
It's vital that you contact your sponsor to help us work through the details of your reporting.
If you have not heard from us within two weeks of receiving your orders, please contact our Executive Officer directly. I look forward to meeting you in person and serving alongside you in MUNRO.
