Commander Tabitha A. Schiro

Senior Reserve Officer Sector San Diego

Commander Schiro assumed the duties and responsibilities of Sector San Diego Senior Reserve Officer in September 2016.  Previously, she was assigned to Coast Guard Reserve Unit at U.S. Southern Command in Miami, Florida from 2012-2016.  There, she fulfilled leadership roles in the Exercise and Training Branch, where she led the Maritime Component of the annual multi-national TRADEWINDS Exercise, which focused on expanding Caribbean partner nations’ capabilities in countering transnational organized crime.  From 2011-2012, Commander Schiro was assigned as Senior Reserve Officer of Marine Safety Unit Chicago, where she was responsible for coordinating the efforts of over 25 personnel in supporting CG Reserve missions in the Great Lakes area of responsibility.  Additional prior assignments include Senior Reserve Officer, CG Sector Juneau, and Reserve Response Department Head, CG Sector San Diego. 

Commander Schiro’s Coast Guard Reserve duty has included active duty tours in response to the Deepwater Horizon Incident, where she coordinated all tactical tasking, maintenance and logistics support for over 20 Coast Guard Cutters assigned to the response effort. Additionally, Commander Schiro earned Deck Watch Officer and Boatswain Mate of the Watch qualifications while serving aboard America’s Tall Ship, the Coast Guard Cutter EAGLE, over two summers in support of the Coast Guard Academy cadet training mission.

While on active duty from 1996-2004, Commander Schiro served as Operations Officer of USCGC GENTIAN in Atlantic Beach, NC and Executive Officer of USCGC PADRE in Key West, FL.  Following her underway assignments, she was assigned to Atlantic Area Cutter Forces staff where she served as the Area Patrol Boat Manager and Budget Manager for Major Cutters.  During that assignment, Commander Schiro was part of the team that oversaw the first deployment of Coast Guard 110’ WPBs in support of Operation Iraq Freedom and led planning efforts for the operational succession of 110’ Patrol Boats by 154’ Fast Response Cutters.
