WAMS (Waterway Analysis Management System)

This analysis, officially known as a Waterways Analysis and Management System (WAMS) study, is a tool the Coast Guard uses to plan and implement the Aids to Navigation (ATON) program. WAMS studies are conducted every five years on each federally designated navigable waterway. Studies are normally announced in the Coast Guard Weekly Notice to Mariners and may also be publicized through the media or direct mailings.

The Coast Guard looks for two primary results from WAMS. First, we identify actions that can enhance safe navigation on a waterway over the next five years. Second, we use the data we collect to anticipate and plan our budgeting process at both the regional and national levels for the same time frame.

In conducting a WAMS, the report writer solicits user input and rides at least one Coast Guard and commercial vessel, and when available other federal, state, or local government vessels, to view the waterway firsthand. They review existing navigational literature, such as charts, Coast Pilots, Light Lists, and Sailing Directions, with an eye toward accuracy. They consider anything that may affect safe navigation on the waterway, including geological or other physical changes, changing political or economic trends, accident and pollution histories near navigational aids, and sensitive military or environmental issues. These studies, mandated by Congress, are an important tool for both the Coast Guard and waterway users. Your input is valuable and appreciated.
