Commander Ray A. Slapkunas

Commander Ray Slapkunas assumed the duties of Deputy Sector Commander, San Diego in June 2022. As the alternate Captain of the Port and second in command, he is responsible for leading maritime operations to ensure the safety, security, law enforcement, and environmental protection from the U.S. – Mexico Maritime Border north to Dana Point, CA to 200 nautical miles offshore, and east to the Colorado River, and inland navigable lakes of Arizona and southern areas of Utah and Nevada.

Prior to arriving in San Diego, Commander Slapkunas served as the Joint Training and Exercises Branch Chief for North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command. In this role, he was responsible for providing the Combatant Command with joint training and education in order to be ready to secure and defend our homelands.

As a Coast Guard Helicopter Flight Examiner, Instructor Pilot, and Aircraft Commander, Commander Slapkunas has accumulated over 4,100 flight hours in the MH-60T flying homeland security, law enforcement, and search and rescue missions. Commander Slapkunas' previous assignments include: MH-60T Division Chief, Aviation Training Center Mobile, AL; Public Affairs Department Head, Training Department Head, and Aviation Schedules Branch Chief, Air Station Clearwater (two tours); Air Station Kodiak, AK; and initial assignment as a Waterways and Intelligence Officer at Marine Safety Office Houston, TX.

Enjoying over 20 years of active duty service, Commander Slapkunas graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Engineering, and he joined the Coast Guard through the Maritime Graduate Direct Commission Officer program in June 2002. He is a graduate of the United States Naval Flight Training School in Pensacola, FL and earned his naval aviator "wings of gold" in October 2005. In addition, he holds a Master of Education in Educational Technology from the University of Texas.

A native of San Antonio, TX, he is married to the former Brandi Casey of Georgiana, AL, and they are proud parents of one daughter, Grace.
