It was the first cutter to steam through the Mediterranean and Red seas, transit the Suez Canal, and visit the Far East by way of the Indian Ocean. McCulloch and the men who sailed it remain a part of the legend and lore of the long blue line. #SundayReading

The #USCG is looking at alternatives to pyrotechnic flares through the use of LED devices. The alternative would provide a conspicuous and identifiable two-hour signal that lasts far longer than current pyrotechnic flares. Pyrotechnic flares can pose a safety hazard to people not trained in their use. In addition, expired flares can create environmental hazards through leaching chemicals when disposed of in landfills or at sea. Which distress signal would you prefer?

"We're in a house. We're trapped. The water level's rising and I have my 85-year-old grandfather here and we can't move him. What do we do?" When Harvey hit Houston, local networks in the area became so overwhelmed, #USCG calls were routed to the Coast Guard's National Command Center in Washington, D.C., but how were they able to identify areas and individuals with the greatest need? Coast Guard Geospatial Intelligence officers created a heat map showing caller locations and the type of assistance requested to better manage resources on the ground.
