Dutch Harbor, Aug. 20, 2017 —
Hello again! After a stop in Seward, AK, we are on our way to Dutch Harbor to embark our science party for the second science mission of the summer, Arctic West Summer (AWS) 1702, brought to us by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Wood’s Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI)!
On Wednesday, August 12th, HEALY sailed through beautiful Resurrection Bay with great weather and arrived in Seward. Once in port, we said farewell to the 1701 science party, media teams, some of our temporary assigned duty personnel, as well as a handful of permanent party crewmembers. Thank you all for a great first mission of 2017, and good luck in your future endeavors! Although HEALY lost part of her crew, she also welcomed seven new permanent party crewmembers. Welcome aboard!
While in Seward, HEALY’s crew quickly made their way to the nearby mountains, glaciers, and ice-fields. The first night in port, many crewmembers celebrated the promotions of our Operations Officer (OPS), CDR Everette, and Support Officer (SUPPO), F&S3 VanHorn at the American Legion Post No. 5 in downtown Seward. HEALY crewmembers returned to the American Legion later in the week to help this great organization with some upgrade projects, including removal of an old deck and some painting. Post 5 has been very generous and welcoming to HEALY for years—this was the least we could do for them.
HEALY got back underway on August 17th for Dutch Harbor. While en route, we had a little time for a fish call. Several anglers were able to bring some halibut and other rock fish on deck. We also spent two days training with Air Station Kodiak, conducting more than 70 day and night evolutions to hone skills and qualify new air crews and flight deck personnel.
Stay tuned for another update on HEALY’s Arctic West Summer 2017 mission next week!
Very respectfully,
ENS Samuel Wood
