Arctic Ocean, Sept. 10, 2017 —
Hello again, readers! Welcome back to another addition to HEALY’s weekly blog. HEALY is headed back south from the Arctic and into the Bering Sea to conduct more science operations and an eventual moor in Dutch Harbor, AK. For the two-day transit to the next site, 24 hour science operations have been suspended, allowing HEALY’s crew and the embarked science party much needed rest after working around-the-clock the past couple of weeks, sometimes fighting 40 knot winds and 15 foot swells to get the job done.
Just a few days ago, HEALY passed the half-way point in her Arctic West Summer deployment. CS1 Lisa Densmore celebrated the milestone by making a camel-themed coconut cake for dessert and a night of board and card games on the mess deck. A friendly walrus caught wind of our half-way celebration and wanted to join as it played near HEALY’s fantail and swam around the wire holding the deployed science gear.
Earlier this week, two shipmates, MK1 William Hawley and MK1 Camille Sutton earned their Underway Engineer of the Watch (EOW) qualifications. The EOW is charged with the safe operation of all equipment and machinery to support HEALY’s operational missions. The EOW controls the machinery plant and provides safe, reliable propulsion and electrical power for the ship. They are also charged with leaded responses to control and minimize any casualties. Congratulations MK1 Hawley and MK1 Sutton!
Yesterday at an All Hands quarters CSCS Jami Wheeler and CS1 Lisa Densmore pinned Honovi Trudell’s new rank insignia on as he was advanced to Culinary Specialist Third Class (CS3). Congratulations Petty Officer Trudell!
Check back weekly for more information on HEALY’s Arctic West Summer 2017 mission!
